An ongoing Ebola outbreak, first declared in May, is on track to become the deadliest in history, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. The virus has claimed over 2,000 lives so far, with thousands more reported cases across affected regions.

The scale of the current crisis has raised alarm among global health authorities, who are battling to contain the highly contagious disease. Experts fear the death toll could rise further, potentially eclipsing previous major outbreaks.

Ebola haemorrhagic fever is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and then spreads through human-to-human transmission via direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and with surfaces and materials contaminated with these fluids.

Since its official declaration on 15 May, the outbreak has seen a rapid increase in both confirmed cases and fatalities. Health workers continue to face significant challenges in containment, including community mistrust and insecurity in some areas, which hinder efforts to track contacts and safely bury the dead.

The protracted nature of the outbreak means resources are stretched, and public health campaigns are intensifying to educate communities on prevention and early detection. International aid organisations are working alongside national health ministries to bolster response capabilities.

Previous major Ebola outbreaks, such as the devastating West African epidemic of 2014-2016, highlighted the critical importance of rapid intervention and sustained public health measures.
