The UK's National Energy System Operator (NESO) has issued a power supply warning across Britain as the country endures its third severe heatwave this summer.
The warning, an Electricity Margin Notice (EMN), signals tighter than usual electricity reserves, prompting concerns over potential strain on the national grid during peak demand periods. Temperatures are forecast to remain above 30 degrees Celsius in many regions through the weekend, exacerbating the demand challenge.
Rising Demand Strains National Grid
The unprecedented demand for electricity is primarily driven by widespread reliance on fans and air conditioning units as millions attempt to mitigate the oppressive heat. This surge in consumption is placing significant pressure on generation capacity and transmission infrastructure, particularly during the late afternoon and early evening.
NESO announced the EMN earlier on Thursday, indicating that the buffer between available generation and anticipated demand was narrower than comfortable. Such notices are issued when operators need to ensure that sufficient generation and reserve capacity are secured to meet anticipated peaks in usage.
Record Temperatures Drive Power Consumption
The Met Office confirmed this week that July has already seen two distinct periods of extreme heat, with this third wave pushing national averages significantly above seasonal norms. Major urban centres, including London, Manchester, and Birmingham, have recorded temperatures consistently exceeding 32 degrees Celsius, with some areas in the South East reaching 35 degrees.
Households and businesses alike are grappling with stifling conditions, with reports of pharmacies and supermarkets selling out of cooling devices and portable air conditioning units. Commuters on public transport have faced sweltering journeys, exacerbating the broader discomfort experienced nationwide as people seek refuge indoors.
Authorities Urge Energy Conservation

This latest warning follows similar alerts earlier in the summer and in previous years, underscoring a growing vulnerability in the UK's energy infrastructure during extreme weather events. The increased frequency and intensity of heatwaves pose a dual challenge to the energy sector: higher demand for cooling, alongside potential operational issues for power generation plants. Some older power stations can become less efficient in very high temperatures, and cooling water sources can also be affected.

Long-term strategies involve boosting renewable energy capacity, improving energy storage, and developing more flexible grid infrastructure to better cope with fluctuating demand.
The EMN is expected to remain in effect until Friday morning, with NESO continuously assessing the weather forecasts and demand projections. The public is advised to stay hydrated and follow official health guidance during the ongoing period of extreme heat.
