A Russian warship fired two emergency flares at a Danish military helicopter in the Baltic Sea, prompting strong condemnation from Copenhagen and escalating regional tensions.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the incident as "reckless action from Russia towards Denmark's military". Her government summoned Russia's ambassador to Copenhagen to protest what it called an increasingly aggressive pattern of Russian behaviour in the region.
"Reckless action from Russia towards Denmark’s military."
The encounter occurred this week as the Danish helicopter was operating in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. The Russian vessel discharged two emergency flares in its direction.
Regional Incidents Intensify
The incident follows a series of heightened security alerts across NATO's eastern flank. Overnight, NATO fighter jets scrambled to intercept and shoot down a drone over Lithuania, which alliance officials have linked to Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
Separately, Poland's air force also scrambled fighter jets after detecting Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory near its border. This occurred a day after Polish authorities retrieved a suspected Russian drone that had drifted into its waters.
These actions underscore a period of intense military activity and increased vigilance by NATO member states bordering Russia and Ukraine.
Growing Tensions with Moscow
The Baltic Sea incident and other incursions come amidst the continuing conflict in Ukraine, which has led to a significant deterioration in relations between Russia and Western nations.
NATO has substantially bolstered its presence and readiness along its eastern borders since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Member states frequently report Russian military aircraft and vessels operating close to their airspace and territorial waters.
The Kremlin has not yet issued any public comment regarding the Danish accusation or the other reported incidents.
Denmark's Foreign Ministry indicated it would continue to monitor Russian military activity closely in the Baltic Sea, a region of critical strategic importance to both NATO and Russia.
