Health authorities have issued a warning to holidaymakers following a sharp increase in cases of cyclospora parasite infection, with a significant number of those affected having recently returned from trips to Mexico.
Since April, 67 cases of the gut parasite have been recorded, according to the BBC, prompting public health bodies to advise travellers to exercise caution when visiting high-risk areas.
Understanding Cyclospora Infection
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal infection known as cyclosporiasis. It is typically transmitted through contaminated food or water, often from fresh produce that has come into contact with faeces containing the parasite.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis can be severe and include watery, sometimes explosive, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, and significant fatigue. If left untreated, these symptoms can persist for several weeks or even months.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers heading to regions where cyclospora is prevalent, such as Mexico, are advised to take stringent precautions regarding food and water hygiene. This includes avoiding tap water, ice made from tap water, and unpasteurised dairy products.
Health officials recommend peeling all fruit and vegetables yourself, ensuring food is thoroughly cooked, and avoiding salads or any raw produce that cannot be peeled. It is crucial for anyone developing symptoms upon their return to the UK to seek prompt medical attention and inform their doctor about their recent travel history.
