A severe spell of heavy rains and flash floods has caused widespread devastation in Bangladesh, leaving at least 51 people dead and thousands displaced overnight, BBC World reports.

Flash floods and landslides have hit large parts of the country, forcing people to flee their homes and seek shelter in higher areas. The government has launched an emergency response operation to provide assistance to those affected.
