Australia's iconic St Kilda little penguin colony is facing a severe threat from bird flu, with volunteers estimating that the disease could wipe out between a fifth and two-fifths of its population. The colony, home to approximately 1,400 little penguins, is a popular attraction and a significant urban wildlife site.
The potential loss of 20 to 40 per cent of the birds represents a substantial blow to the unique colony, which draws visitors from around the world to its breakwater habitat in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne.

The little penguin, also known as the fairy penguin, is the smallest species of penguin, typically standing around 33 centimetres tall.
Bird flu outbreaks have become a global concern, affecting various wild bird species and, in some instances, poultry farms. Historically, Australia has seen fewer widespread outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) compared to other continents, making this particular threat to a significant wild colony especially alarming.

The potential decimation of a large portion of the St Kilda colony could have broader ecological implications for the local marine environment. Little penguins play a role in their ecosystem as predators of small fish and cephalopods, and their numbers contribute to the biodiversity of Port Phillip Bay.
