Alibaba's shares climbed 3% in Hong Kong on Tuesday after the company revealed a new AI chip and a plan to expand its data‑centre presence worldwide.

The chip, called Zhenwu V900, is designed to boost throughput for machine‑learning tasks, giving Alibaba Cloud a potential edge over rivals such as Nvidia and other silicon makers. According to CNBC, the device will be integrated into the company’s cloud platform to support increasingly complex AI workloads.

Alibaba's new chip could reshape the competitive landscape for AI infrastructure.

Alongside the hardware launch, Alibaba announced a sweeping data‑centre build‑out, adding new sites across Asia, Europe and North America. The expansion aims to accommodate the surging demand for cloud‑based AI services and to reduce reliance on third‑party infrastructure.

The move follows earlier investments in quantum computing and AI research, signalling a broader strategy to secure supply chains for high‑performance computing components.

Analysts suggest that the Zhenwu V900 will lower latency for customers in China and could drive additional revenue for the cloud arm. They also note that the chip’s performance benchmarks, once released, will determine whether the product can compete with established silicon leaders.

Alibaba’s announcement comes as the global AI race intensifies. Firms such as Microsoft, Amazon and Google are expanding their own hardware portfolios, and the Chinese market is keen to develop domestic alternatives to foreign suppliers.

The share price reaction indicates that investors see commercial potential in the new chip. The company said it will begin rolling out the device in its data centres over the next twelve months.

In addition to the hardware, Alibaba will increase its data‑centre capacity, a move that could create new jobs and stimulate local infrastructure development in the regions where the new sites will be built.

Alibaba remains a dominant player in Asia’s cloud market, holding roughly a quarter of the regional share. The company’s recent commitment to invest billions in research and development reflects its ambition to lead in next‑generation AI solutions.

Competing cloud providers are likely to accelerate their own hardware projects in response. The next few months will be crucial to see whether the Zhenwu V900 delivers the performance gains that have been forecast.
